Blankets for Valves, Flanges & Mechanical Equipment

Removable insulation blankets are custom-fabricated, reusable covers — typically a high-temperature fabric jacket over fiberglass or needled insulation — that strap or wire onto valves, flanges, strainers, pumps, and equipment. Unlike permanent insulation, they come off in minutes for maintenance and go right back on, so components stay insulated instead of being left bare after the first service call. K. What is a removable insulation blanket and when should you use it?

A removable insulation blanket (also called an insulation jacket, soft cover, or valve cover) is a sewn, form-fitted insulation pad with a durable outer jacket — commonly silicone-coated fiberglass cloth — secured with straps, D-rings, hook-and-loop, or lacing wire. Use removable blankets anywhere insulation must be taken off repeatedly: valves, flanges, unions, strainers, steam traps, expansion joints, pump casings, heat exchanger heads, and instrumentation.

The rule of thumb: if a component will be opened for maintenance more than once, it should get a removable blanket, not hard insulation. Hard-insulated fittings get cut open at the first repair and are rarely re-insulated — leaving permanent energy loss and burn hazards.

Why insulate valves and flanges at all?

An uninsulated 6-inch gate valve on a 350°F steam line loses roughly as much heat as 20+ feet of bare pipe. Across a mechanical room full of bare valves, that is real, recurring fuel cost. Insulating them also:

Every blanket is field-measured and custom-sewn to the component — no generic slip-on covers that gap and sag. Our process:

  1. Field measurement. We template each valve, flange, or equipment surface on site, noting orientation, clearances, stems, and actuators.
  2. Material selection. Insulation media and jacketing matched to the service temperature and environment — fiberglass or needled E-glass cores; silicone-coated fiberglass, PTFE, or aluminized jackets; stainless mesh liners for high-temp work.
  3. Sewn with high-temperature thread, tagged and labeled per component so blankets always return to the right location.
  4. Fitted with straps, buckles, or lacing anchors; cold-service blankets get sealed vapor barriers.
  5. Blanket schedules keyed to your valve tags for O&M turnover.

Where are removable blankets used?

  • Steam and hydronic systems— valves, PRV stations, steam traps, condensate equipment
  • Chilled water and refrigeration— valves and specialties needing vapor-tight, condensation-free covers
  • Central plants— pump casings, heat exchanger heads, boiler manways and handholes

Do you handle one-off blankets and full-facility surveys?

Yes — both. We fabricate single replacement blankets for a failed cover, and we run full-facility insulation energy appraisals that identify every bare component, quantify the BTU and dollar losses, and prioritize the payback. The appraisal is performed by an NIA Certified Insulation Energy Appraiser using the NIA’s standardized methodology, so the savings numbers hold up in a capital request.
