Chilled Water, Steam, Hydronic & Domestic Systems

K. Guller Insulation insulates commercial and industrial piping systems — chilled water, steam and condensate, heating hot water, domestic hot and cold water, refrigerant, and drainage — using fiberglass, elastomeric, cellular glass, and mineral wool sized to IECC/ASHRAE 90.1 thickness tables. Cold systems get continuous sealed vapor barriers; exposed runs get PVC, aluminum, or stainless jacketing. Union crews serve Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

Do you insulate chilled water pipe?

Yes — chilled water is the most condensation-critical system we insulate, and a core specialty. A 44°F pipe in a humid ceiling plenum sits well below dew point most of the year in our climate; without the right insulation thickness and an unbroken vapor barrier, it sweats, drips onto ceilings, and corrodes under the insulation. We install fiberglass with sealed ASJ/vapor-retarder jacketing, closed-cell elastomeric, or cellular glass per the spec, with every joint, fitting, and hanger detail vapor-sealed — because a vapor barrier is only as good as its worst seam.

Which piping systems does K. Guller Insulation insulate?

Valves, flanges, and strainers on these systems are best served with removable insulation blankets so maintenance doesn’t strip them bare.

How thick does pipe insulation
need to be?

Under the IECC/ASHRAE 90.1 tables, most commercial hydronic and domestic hot water piping requires 1 to 2 inches of insulation, and higher-temperature systems like steam require up to 4.5 inches, with thickness increasing with pipe size and fluid temperature.

What insulation materials do you install, and to what standards?

Fiberglass pipe insulation

ASTM C547; the default for most hot and chilled systems, with ASJ or ASJ+ jacketing

Closed-cell elastomeric

ASTM C534; refrigerant, chilled, and condensation-critical services

Cellular glass

ASTM C552; impermeable, non-combustible — below-ambient, underground, and demanding vapor-drive applications

Mineral wool

ASTM C547/C612 types; high-temperature and fire-performance applications

Jacketing

PVC (ASTM C1136-faced systems with fitting covers), 0.016–0.024” aluminum, or stainless for mechanical rooms, exteriors, and washdown areas

Materials are furnished per your spec section — typically 22 07 19 (plumbing piping insulation) and 23 07 19 (HVAC piping insulation) — with submittals referencing the ASTM standard line for line.

What separates a good pipe insulation job from a callback?

Three details, all invisible at handover: continuous vapor barriers on cold systems (sealed at every joint and termination, not just the straight runs), insulated hanger inserts (so the pipe’s weight doesn’t crush the insulation and breach the barrier at every support), and finished fittings (molded or fabricated covers, not stuffed-and-taped elbows that fail first). Our foremen check all three — it’s why our chilled water work doesn’t drip.

Domestic cold water isn’t usually required by the energy code, but it’s routinely insulated anyway to stop condensation — a sweating cold line above a ceiling causes the same stains and corrosion as a leak.

Fiberglass with a fully sealed vapor-retarder jacket is the common spec; closed-cell elastomeric or cellular glass are used where vapor drive is severe or the spec demands an impermeable material. The vapor seal matters more than the material choice.
